I had a fantastic weekend. One child had double ear infections. Another child had the barfing flu. On the bright side, I did get to read The New Yorker and watch the Oscars. So, not all bad.
Some other thoughts:
1. Just when I purchase $80 of "pharmaceutical grade" multivitamins, a new study finds that vitamins & supplements DO NOTHING for your health. ZIP. ZERO. NADA. Shocking discoveries conclude that eating fresh fruits and vegetables is way better. WHO KNEW? All this time I've been hoping that popping a few Vitamin C's would atone for sitting on my butt all day eating potato chips! Shoot, I should be a scientist. 'Cuz I've got a few earth-shattering discoveries of my own. Like: "Studies show that eating Mint Milanos does not aid weight loss."
2. Ian McEwan: But I like to call him IAN McIAN. I have a few choice words for you, Ian McIan: ATONEMENT STUNK. Did you think yourself very clever for stringing me along, only to WHAM me at the end with the unexpected "plot twist"? That's not clever. It's cruel. You meanie. I know, I know. Briony's story is supposed to be about the lies we tell ourselves, the fictions we create to help us justify our mistakes. Whatever. It still stunk. So there. Elizabeth McElizabeth has spoken.
3. Machine gunning robots: pretty much the coolest thing EV-ah! This backyard genius, Jerry Baber, has invented the only stainless steel automatic shotgun in existence. The AA-12 has NO recoil. Freaking unbelievable. He's got it mounted it on top of a mini-unmanned helicopters and on a rolling, unmanned mini-tanks. I woud like to buy one for my son's birthday. Alas, he's not selling. And up until now, the military isn't buying, either. I think that will change soon. Don't you?
4. Oscars: my favorite dress was the one worn by Marisa Tomei. The architectural structure and pleating of her dress was stunning. It was a true work of art. Other favorites: Anne Hathaway's gorgeous sparkly Armani Prive dress and Penelope Cruz's 60's year old, vintage beauty.
5. Slumdog Millionaire: BEST MOVIE ON PLANET EARTH! Not that I've seen it. But still, JAI HO is my new favorite theme song, hands down.
6. Hugh Jackman: he did a great job. The Frost/Nixon thing was hilarious. And who knew Anne Hathaway could sing?
7. The presenters: I LOVED the way they had the actors/actresses present those very personal, moving tributes to each of the nominees.
8. Watched a great movie: Henry Poole Is Here. Starring Luke Wilson. The movie jacket read: "It will take a miracle to change his attitude!" Which sounds lame but the movie was surprisingly touching. And fairly clean (some language).
Now I'm off to wash barfy sheets and drink my afternoon cup of coffee.
JAI HO!
