Paradise Recovered

Paradise Recovered is a new indie film about the damaging effects of religious abuse. The film traces the story of Esther, a devout young woman living with a fundamentalist pastor's family. Something terrifying happens to Esther and instead of being protected, Esther finds herself kicked out of her home and church–wandering alone in a small Indiana town.

The film-writer, Andie Redwine, contacted me and asked if I wanted to pre-screen their film. She had read my blog and recognized many similarities in my experience. I was, of course, thrilled to watch her film.

But I was also heartbroken. What I experienced inside my abusive fundamentalist church has often felt very isolating. There are not many Christians–let alone non-Christians–who can relate to my experience. Watching Andie's film brought me to tears because it showed me that I'm not alone.

During the course of the film, my husband looked over at me and chuckled: "And to think we thought our church was so special and unique."

It was stunning to watch the film because there were so many similar pet doctrines and sub-culture lifestyle choices. Andie, a cult survivor herself, did very thorough research and her film is a testament to that.

This is a film that, although fictional, captures the essence of what life is like inside abusive fundamentalism. It demonstrates the destructive power of mind-control, guilt, fear of damnation and group think.

Best of all, part of the profits of Andie's film are being donated to provide mental health services for survivors of religious abuse. This film is both entertaining and helps those who have been hurt.

So, please watch the trailer below and then check out Paradise Recovered for more information.

I’ve exchanged some emails with Andie, she has been extremely kind and compassionate.

I both do and do not want to watch this film.

I was going to ask you if you’d seen this, EE.

    Hi Elizabeth,

Many lives have been shattered by those who take on a persona that they are right about everything. What this tells me is that they have no real concern for the lives they manipulate, intimidate and abuse. For those who escape, there is the opportunity to breathe freely but many others continue on the death march.

Perhaps this movie will illuminate on those who operate in the shadows feigning Christianity while educating those who find themselves immersed in religious slavery and those who are on the outside confused by what they see.

My heart goes out to those who suffer abuse at the hands of those who claim to be followers of Christ.

If it makes you feel better, Kat, we both did and did not want to make this film.

    Peace,
    Andie

Thank you, Elizabeth, first for agreeing to test screen the film. And thank you so very much for your kind review. We’re honored to join you and others like you to be a voice for those who suffer.

The line about the right-wing fundies, far-left bohos and the health food store? If I wasn’t already interested in this film because of my background, that would be enough to sell it to me, ha!

Also, maybe I’m even more dense than I thought, but where do I find the film, to watch it myself? Is it out yet for the general public?

Oh, I so want to see this! Andie commented on my blog after I shared what the “fruit” of fundamentalism did to me.

Now I want to see this! I can not wait.

Elizabeth Esther, you are *not* alone in your experience. I often felt like the isolated nut case myself, but since I have been healing, I am finding a lot more people extremely hurt by extreme fundamentalism.

I’m curious, too. How does someone watch this if it’s indie? Do you buy it from the site?

    Interesting trailer . . . I suppose I wouldn’t mind watching the entire film, but I don’t know if I really want to . . .

    Hello again.

We are planning to start listing screenings of our film in September/October. The release process is a long one, and we are planning to go the film festival route first, plus do a DVD release. It’s all pretty dependent upon the publicity that we get at festivals and from some key media contacts.

We’re not a big production company. I mean, I have to clear my workspace nightly so that we can have dinner. But we think we’ve made an important film, and we will make sure everyone gets a chance to view it in some way. Thanks!

Please make sure you tell Elizabeth, so she can let us know once it’s been released. I can relate to the one poster who said “I want to see it, but I don’t”.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the trailer!! I think it will be an awesome film for young adults to see and for adults (like myself) who came out of such a lifestyle. Religion, as we want to believe is something that is pure, without stain. Which through Christ it is, yet so many fundamentalist churches have taken that pureness and driven it so deeply into an isolated world within themselves.
