THE SATURDAY EVENING BLOG POST, vol. 3, issue 2

Welcome to the SATURDAY EVENING BLOG POST!
This is where bloggers gather on the first Saturday of each month to share
their favorite post from the past month.

This month, we’re sharing our favorite post from FEBRUARY 2011!

: :

I’ll begin by sharing my favorite post from February 2011: Why Feminists Hate Fairy Tales. This post could have been also called: The Problem With Literalistic Thinking. It’s a problematic way of thinking that can, I think, be detected in many areas of life.

Now, it’s your turn! Here’s how to participate:

  1. Pick one of YOUR posts from the last month. Insert that specific post (not your home page) into the Linky form here.
  2. Create a new post on your blog linking back here and encouraging your readers to come join the fun! It’s always wonderful to meet new bloggers.

The Saturday Evening Blog Post is a celebration of family-friendly art and writing. Please no links to products or giveaways. Thank you.

While I write from Africa most of the time, this post was written during a recent visit to the States. That will become apparent as you read the post.

I published this post 1 year plus 1 day after becoming Catholic. In it, I wrote about what I learned of post-Vatican II changes and the reform of the reform to address excesses.

It’s probably of more interest to your Catholic readers, but I think all churches struggle with progressive vs. orthodox elements. This plays out much differently in the Catholic Church because of our structure.

Thanks for hosting, EE. I chose a post that was inspired by the beautiful (and not-even-remotely-heretical) words of Ann Voskamp.

I linked to a post I published on Deeper Story last month about learning deeper intimacy in marriage. Since intimacy seems to be a trending topic these days. *ahem*

  • Dorothy Vining

The inside story of one of those “operation rescues” and police brutality.

Race Fee: $15. Shoes: $80. Training: Exhausting. That Moment: Priceless.
I chose a post about a ‘perfect’ running moment I had earlier this month … writing about it was almost as much fun as living the moment was.

  • http://faithandfood.morizot.net/ Scott Morizot

I picked a post on prayer and evil. Cheers!

  • http://www.kathleenbasi.com Kathleen@so much to say

Thanks for hosting! I’ve been thinking a lot about your posts on fairy tales & princesses in the last few weeks. I think the answer to this conflict, like *almost* every other, lies in the middle ground.

  • http://chaseafterwind.blogspot.com Amy B @ A Chase After Wind

All my posts this month were short, so it was hard to choose. A good goal for March – more content!!! Thanks. :)

Whoopsie, I accidentally linked to the archives for the whole month of February. I meant to link to “The Tables of My Memory” written on 2.7.2011.

      • http://www.elizabethesther.com elizabeth

feel free to re-do the link!

  • http://annieology.com annieology

My post is about why my Tween has a Facebook. Thanks for hosting.

  • http://www.riceandbeansandotherfinethings.com Lorie

Thanks for hosting this! I love your blog, and this is my first time to comment (I think). My post has no nutritional value, but I think we’ve all had that one time when something goes awry with our blog (technically speaking). Makes me want to pull my hair out.

  • http://campfire-song.com Lindsey @ Campfire Song

Thank you for hosting – this is my first one!
My post asks what keeps us where we are – particularly, why my family chose to put down roots where it’s cold six months per year.

  • http://boysrising.blogspot.com/ Autherine

Thanks for the opportunity to post. My favorite for Feb. is “9 lessons from 9 years of marriage.” It was nice to look back and reflect on the mostly fun, often crazy journey.

  • http://deodate.wordpress.com/ Andie

I think this is such a great idea Elizabeth…thanks for doing this!

  • http://saintsinprogress.blogspot.com Nicole

So sad that this was my favorite post from February–what a slacker month for my blog. (Then again, I’ve had a few of those.) I loved your pick, though, Elizabeth!

  • http://barefootmel.com Mel

This is cool…I’ve never participated before, but I like it. :) I had a couple posts I couldn’t choose between but decided on the one that did NOT have a link of me singing. :) I wrote this post for my hubby on Valentine’s Day this year. It’s been a hard year, but I love my man.

  • http://hippiehousewife.blogspot.com Cynthia

    Thanks for hosting this!

I chose an entry titled “Seeds of Discontent”. This entry was a reminder to myself to stop living with one foot in “if only” and instead live fully in the present – content with where I am, grateful for all that I have, seeking beauty in all things, and finding joy today.

It has been a very sparse month in terms of posting- here’s one on garlic (!)

I don’t write much poetry but an acquaintance asked me to contribute to a journal of random profound thoughts gathered from around the country to be published. Entries are anonymous but my contact would know my entry–so I whipped up this poem that still felt profound but more anonymous than the other entries.

February was a slow month for me. I had a lot going on and was kind of in a funk. I felt that this post was particularly honest and insightful, though. Thanks for opening this up for us, Elizabeth! As a newbie blogger, I appreciate the opportunity to genuinely share.

  • http://www.barefootandpregnantblog.blogspot.com Calah

Hey Elizabeth! I’m linking to a post about daily life as a blogger, and how uninstalling my stat counter would probably save me hours of time each day.

Thanks, as always, for graciously hosting us! I somehow missed your fairy-tale post (maybe because I was mad at you for your “Cinderella Ate My Daughter” post ;) ) but I’m gonna go back and read it. I love fairy tales and think that we all need more of them. Especially us adults!

  • http://www.zemeks.blogspot.com Karen and Gerard

We just discovered this. I chose one that my husband and I both contributed to.

Did you know Mrs. 4444 at Half-Past Kissin’t time hosts Saturday Sampling every week? It’s the same idea as this, except it’s for the past week and you can also link up posts that aren’t yours that you think were very good. Here is the link if you want to participate there: http://www.halfpastkissintime.com/2011/03/saturday-sampling-march-4-2011.html

The entry I posted is my favorite for February because although that little girl is 15 now, when I reread this post I can clearly see my 4yr old sparkly girl swinging in the yard.

  • http://fromthepulpitofmylife.blogspot.com/ Ruth Ann

My February post is about my childhood memories of celebrating St. Patrick Day. Thanks, again, Elizabeth, for hosting this event.

  • http://livingpower.blogspot.com Laurie @mylivingpower

It’s funny you mention it because I wrote a post in Feb that ONE person had a scathing comment about. It was my first mean comment ever. So I wrote a post sharing how I felt and the process I went through when I got the comment (not as a response, but to share my heart and give ideas about how to deal with criticism). It was actually (surprisingly) THAT post that got a lot of controversial reactions from people. And it kind of threw me off. So here it is: http://livingpower.blogspot.com/2011/02/when-were-scared.html

I posted our Peaceful Snow Day in the woods. The day was so calm, sunny and quiet. I am glad I was able to capture the moment.

  • http://www.thefarriswheel.blogspot.com Jennifer

Hi! I’ve never been here before. Glad to stumble across your blog. :) My February post that generated the most discussion (which I guess makes it my favorite) was about why I left Facebook. Thanks for hosting…I’m enjoying reading others’ posts!

  • http://embracinglife-rose.blogspot.com Rose

    Thank you for hosting this.

  • http://www.tuckedintohim.blogspot.com Karen

I linked to the blog post that generated the most comments; perhaps not my best writing, but it must have struck a chord with a few readers. :) Thanks for this venue, my friend.

    Resting in Him Alone,

Thanks for this! I posted about Christian leaders that put burdens on the shoulders of their followers.

  • http://notaminx.blogspot.com/2011/02/do-i-baffle-christ.html @threelittleowls

This month I am linking to my post Do I Baffle Christ?, which explores the emotional turmoil I’ve experienced after the end of a romantic relationship, and the insight it has given me to my relationship with Christ.

[And Elizabeth, one time I tweeted (@threelittleowls) you about the end of this relationship, and then never wrote back to you. Sorry about that. The subject was too raw, and I just shut down instead of slugging through the emotional mess.]

*sigh* My name should read Not A Minx, not @threelittleowls.

Thank you so much for this opportunity to meet and greet. I have discovered some great new writers through this literary cookie swap. The post I shared is about my reexamining the question I most love to ask others, “What must you do?” It’s was time for me to answer anew.

    Hi Elizabeth!
I was delighted to discover your blog this morning and I know I will be checking in often!

I just began blogging last month and the post I linked was my very first. I love your idea of helping us discover new blogs! I’ve enjoyed reading all the entries and have some new favorites. :)

    Blessings,
    Susan

Must start by begging for forgiveness…am linking a March post. I was a slacker in Feb. and have little to show for it.
Mainly though I wanted to say “Hats off!” to you for your article regarding the recent *ahem* intimacy flurry.
And ask KatR…Do you mind if I mentioned your comment in my post? It was too good!
    Thanks for doing this EE!

Greetings! So glad to have come across your blog. What a fun endeavor…adding our favorite post from the previous month. Thanks for the opportunity.

Think I’m going to stroll around here a bit and get to know you a little better.
