Stuff commenters say

The following are real comments, emails and tweets I’ve recently received, only edited for length and grammar. I ain’t judgin’, I’m just sayin’ Imma let these through moderation so I can haz fun with them in this post.

“Elizabeth, Elizabeth. You had me until this post.”
If I only had you until this post, I didn’t really have you.

“Honestly, you just sound bitter.”
Honestly, you just sound dismissive.

“Elizabeth Esther, you confuse me.”
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. I confuse me, too.

“You’re being hypocritical.”
I agree.

“As a Bible believing Christian with a theology degree, I must say your point is contextually OFF.”
As a Bible believing Christian without a theology degree I must say your pride is contextually puffed up.

“Lighten up!”
Sorry, I only starts diets in February. Check back next month.

“What’s the difference between a self-righteous YouTube video and this blog?”
Well, for starters, one is a video and this is a blog.

“Do you think you are saved? Anathema to you!”
And Ichabod to you! Next time we curse each other, let’s do it in Aramaic.

“Mary brought you back to God? Seriously?”
No, literally.

“Your post is an over-reaction.”
Thank you, arbiter of appropriate reactions.

“Forgive this email, but ___________.”
Anytime an email starts like this, I know I’m about to read something unforgivably rude.

“Your judgment, bias and unresolved hurt are showing through.”
Thank God my pantyline isn’t showing through!

“Honestly, you just sound overly sensitive.”
Honestly, you just sound overly insensitive.

“I don’t even see why you would post this.”
Which is probably why you didn’t post it.

“You must be super sensitive about your religion.”
Actually, I’m only super sensitive about cat dander.

“Reading your take, Elizabeth, shows you’re ignorant of Catholic history and dogma.”
What? I’m not ignorant of my Catholic dog! I get her blessed every year.

“I understand you’re on a journey to your PERSONAL truth.”
As opposed to your highly enlightened one, of course.

“Yes, now we all know what Elizabeth would like the Bible to say.”
I’m calling it the EEV. The Elizabeth Esther Version. It’s totally Authorized.

[Three paragraphs of Scripture refuting my opinion]
This was clearly NOT the Authorized Version!

“I don’t think you understand doctrine.”
But I do understand Spocktrine. Does Star Trek knowledge count?

This is the ONLY tweet this person has ever tweeted. Creepy McCreeperson.

“You just don’t get it.”
TRUE! I’M JUST GETTIN’ JIGGY WIT IT!

You’ve got cajones girl.  I will give you that. :)

I have just recently started reading the comments on the big time blogs and I’ve been shocked by what people feel comfortable saying the the authors. I think the anonymity of the computer makes people lose their minds a little bit. The days of this is my opinion and this is your opinion and they are different but  we can disagree civilly seem to be long gone.

    • Anonymous

What I tell myself is that if these people saw me in real life and looked straight into my eyes they’d end up falling in love with me instead of hating me. :) It’s actually happened, too! This is why I rarely take negative comments personally.

      • Anonymous

I often feel this exact same thing. When you know me in person, it is easier to forgive things we disagree about.

        Love you, EE.

  • http://devinrose.heroicvirtuecreations.com/blog/ Devin Rose

Love it! I’ve only received about a third of these. Though one commenter did tell me via email that he’s known to be “a great friend to Catholics” however he makes an exception in my case and thinks I’m an idiot.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, I’m always amused by those kinds of comments. The ones that go something like this: “I usually LOVE Catholics but YOU! YOU! You are an IDIOT!” Or the ones that go something like this: “I have been a longtime reader but THIS! THIS! is the final straw! We are DONE!” :) You inspire me, Devin. I wish I was half as smart as you.

    • KatR

Oh this made me laugh. I can see saying “I have Catholic friends”, but announcing himself “a great friend to Catholics” makes it sound like he’s sponsoring several of them.

      • http://devinrose.heroicvirtuecreations.com/blog/ Devin Rose

Yes he was touting how on an internet message forum he was awarded(?) the title, Friend to Catholics

All I suppose you can say is, “Dude! Thanks for sharing!”

  • http://www.jessicamccracken.com/ Jessica

:)  :)  You make me smile!  I quit reading all the comments.  I didn’t have the exact same reaction, wasn’t sure I agreed, but your post had good thoughts/points and I’m glad ‘cus it sent me thinking about the church and Jesus and how I live with them which is always good I think.

Glad you could have fun with it.

    • Anonymous

I’m glad we don’t always agree. You make me think, too. That’s ALWAYS a good thing! xo.

  • Zachmasonjenna

Whether I always agree with your views or not( most often do)…I love the fact that you’re real… real human, real honest, really You! Write on EE!

    • Anonymous

I don’t even agree with MYSELF all the time! :) I’m not a consistent human being. But I really try to be consistently vulnerable and transparent. I want to be REALLY me. Really human. So, thank you. This comment was the best compliment ever.

      • http://faithandfood.morizot.net/ Scott Morizot

There’s probably no such thing as a consistent human being other than Jesus, except perhaps a saint. (Though judging by the way they tended to react to such statements before their repose, perhaps not.) And we tend to be even more inconsistent with our past selves than our present selves, which implies that we will also be inconsistent with our future selves. ;-)

I’m JIGGY with it….and LOVE is a VERB (have you heard?)   ;)

  • Brenda Tsuchiya

Here’s one more: Love you, love your blog.

And thank you for bringing back my husband’s “Getting jiggy with it” dance.  Makes me giggle every time.

You are hilarious and I adore you !!! :) P.S. I think you are a wonderfully flawed human and REAL christian. HUG.

Wonderfully flawed. I like that. I think I”ll have to add that to my bio line. :) ((HUGS))

  • http://wanderingonpurpose81.blogspot.com/ Amanda @wandering

I have been reading your blog for a couple of months now, and I have especially loved your recent posts.  I’m not even Catholic, and I thought your points the other day were valid about that guy’s – not just him being anti-Catholic  but the whole picture.  And I like the humor you are bringing to it all.

  • http://www.downtoearthwomen.blogspot.com/ Tracey

Holy crow, if you have this many negative comments, you’ve arrived!

Arrived at what, I don’t know. I’m still trying to figure out what that means, LOL.

  • C.R.

Ha! That twitter thing made me laugh. Like, for real? “She has opinions about EVERYTHINNGGGG!”

    • Anonymous

I know! That made me laugh, too!!

      • http://faithandfood.morizot.net/ Scott Morizot

Do you have opinions about things you’ve never heard or considered?

        • Anonymous

Well, no. I might be opinionated, but I try to have informed opinions. :)

  • Anne

From the guy who made the video you posted: “If
you are using my video to bash “the church” be careful. I was in no way
intending to do that. My heart came from trying to highlight and expose
legalism and hypocrisy. The Church is Jesus’ bride so be careful how
you speak of His wife. If a normal dude has right to get pissed when you
bash His wife, it makes me tremble to think how great the weight is
when we do it to Jesus’ wife. The church is His vehicle to reach a lost
word. A hospital for sinners. Saying you love Jesus but hate the Church,
is like a fiancé saying he loves his future bride, but hates her kids.
We are all under grace. Look to Him.”

While watching the video, my first thought was “legalism” before I even read his quote. Why? My background.  I was raised in the Christian Reformed denomination which is characterized by well intentions gone mad aka legalism. The thing about legalism is that people feel safe. If I obey these rules, God will love me. If I don’t eat out on Sundays I’m honoring the Sabbath and God will love me for that. So God stops loving you if you slip up? I must have missed that verse somewhere… Legalism completely overshadows and actually fights against God’s abundance of grace. God doesn’t love us or despise us based on a sinful thought or action – He loved us and choose us in spite of and long before all those things. (I’m a once-saved, always-saved girl, not sure where you stand there) There is just no way that God is so fickle that each time we screw up we are thrown out because His grace covers it all…
Anyways, that wasn’t really the general thought among the people in that denom. Our church split off and joined the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA) but still it didn’t feel right there anymore. I heard stories of PCA churches and legalism. It was unholy for the youth to have a swim party on a Saturday night since they should have been preparing for the services in the morning. A single, pregnant girl was kicked out of the choir. That sort of thing… So now I find my self at a rather large (ok mega) nondenom church. It’s very nonflashy and the services are simple and worship oriented. And while I still dig reformed theology, I’ve grown to resent how many people tend to live it out because the part where God’s grace should be – is missing. What’s funny is that more than once I’ve read your blog and disagree but I keep coming back because I know that neither one of us has it all figured out but I identify with you because you’re wrestling and seeking Jesus. And so am I. And I know that I’ll never have it all figured out but I don’t need to anyway.
I didn’t intend to write so much! Mainly, I wondered if you saw the update from the Jesus>Religion guy and then I thought I’d throw my (long-winded) 2 cents in. :)

“Mary brought you back to God? Seriously?”
No, literally.your post on Jesus sending Mary to comfort you is exactly why i keep coming back to read more here. that post both haunts and comforts me (comforts for obvious reasons, haunts because i am a protestant, and you know what protestants think about Mary!). :)   i’m grateful for your honesty here.

None of those comments you quoted had any theological or logical points. I am flabbergasted by the things people say without backing their assertions up! I linked the previous post on my FB page and got a range of reactions – 61 comments to be exact! It turned into a theological debate about Grace between a former schoolmate and my husband. My husband argued logically, intelligently with quotations from Church Fathers. The other guy, bless his heart, wrote that he aced his Church History exams and got an A in theology. If you need to assert your credentials… I learned so much this week from reading comments to your post as well as the comments on all the FB postings of the anemic video.  What I see again and again is a wishy-washy, feel-good, it’s all good, relevant to me, “theology” that no one thinks out to its logical conclusion. Again I thank you for your previous post. Thank you for the entertainment value of the comments, as well as putting things into actual Biblical/Church perspective. We had some discussions about indivisible pairs as well – Scripture/Church, Faith/Works, Faith/Religion. Here is a quotation from the FB discussion by my husband about faith and religion which turned into grace and religion.

Loved starting my Sunday morning in New England reading this post…and the comments too!  They gave me a good chuckle.  So much better than the way I used to spend my Sunday mornings!!!

    Lighten up, commenting people.

You always make me smile, Paul!

  • Canita

Funny stuff.  :)  Love the “Mary brought you back to God? Seriously?” comment.  Mary brought me back to my Higher Power as well after years of deciding that I was just a hopeless agnostic/maybe an atheist.  My truth looks a bit different from everyone else’s, but that’s okay with me.  Glad of your truth, Elizabeth.

  • Rachel

On the plus side, with comments like that your blog stats had to go through the roof and there was definitely a lively discussion. *Bigsmile*

    • Anonymous

Yeah, the stats rivaled my stats from the day I was on Anderson Cooper. If this tells me anything it’s that Christians love to argue with each other! :)

      • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

        I don’t.

Well, at least you’re being mature about it.  <— sarcasm

      As are you, Cris.  ;)

This post really brightened my day! Love your blog so much, imperfections, “hypocrisy,” and all. :)

  • Holly

Haters are going to hate!  I love your blog, whether I agree with you or not!  Just keep being real, that’s what draws a lot of us here, and it’s also what scares the hell out of all of your detractors.   It will never cease to amaze me how people feel COMPELLED to try and argue someone else out of their own reality….I mean, seriously?

  • theresa46

Hardeeharhar HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA………..thx for the laugh!!!!!!  I think you should write a post like this every sunday! I am a born again Catholic, and nothing makes me more annoyed than the pickled and pruned looking faces of people who call themselves  christians.!!! SMILES everyone SMILES, be of good cheer!

  • Handsfull

    Really good post :)

@Jessica. I read your post. Nicely said.

  • Marie

I have to admit, I also posted a comment the other day stating my perceptions that you’ve been inconsistent sometimes.  When I realized a split second later that I’m FREAKING THE SAME WAY?  Yeah, I decided not to.  :)   Thanks for your blog and this funny post!

    • Marie

      oops, “also” should be “almost”

  • http://kansasbob.com Kansas Bob

Outstanding! Thanks for the smile Elizabeth!

  • Jabmo3

Oh, joy! I made the list twice but to clarify, the “anathema” quote wasn’t me calling you names. It was a direct quote from Vatian II when they clarified if a catholic could believe they were saved. See, if you believed you were they couldn’t collect money for others trying to pay and pray your way out of pergatory, which they made up by the way! It doesn’t surprise me that you don’t know this though.

  • http://bramboniusinenglish.wordpress.com Brambonius

I’m glad that I missed that kind of storm on my blog reactions to that video… And I wonder if I’d be able to turn that kind of comments into something that funny…

  • Jnjmenta

Why is it so hard to listen…..We are the sharpest arrow in the hand of the enemy. If people don’t like what you say, can’t they simply not read. Why oh why must we think we have all the answers and try to destroy those who see and hear differently.  These posts hurt my heart ad I know they hurt the Father’s. Who are any of us to judge what God speaks to you or anyone. Sad so sad- and I bet they all just love the father better than you do. Our insecurities are killing us.

  • Herewegokids7

Firstly, I love that you have a post category named “Smart Assery”.  Because we all need a little of that in our lives, lest we begin to take ourselves (or others) too seriously.  Secondly, you picked out most of the ones that I went, “WTH??” to as I was reading the comments.  You really touched a nerve there, didn’t you? LOL.  And that tweet….good gravy and biscuits….obsessed much?  As to the video…I felt like it was pretty personal, addressing issues that probably he himself had had to deal with in regards to the church, whether it was Catholic or not, I wouldn’t know.  I suspect that when people think ‘organized religion’ they tend to think Catholic in terms of Christianity, at least.  Because it has an obvious hierarchy, etc.

  • Kristen Rosser

    I love your replies.

  • Tonia

Love you darling.  Love your smart-assery.  Tell me how you like “Island of the World” k?

  • Tara S

“Does Star Trek knowledge count?” Oh my gosh, I hope so!  Or at least Star Wars.

  • http://www.adamshome.blogspot.com Erin Adams

Ah!  I was just going to post this link.  He sounds like a great young guy!

  • Lisa

EE, you’re awesome!  I love your intellect, courage, passion, authenticity, and outrageous sense of humor!  Not many folks can so easily transition from spiritual discourse to talking all gangsta.

    You do it so gracefully!

  • http://twitter.com/hmschling4girls Jennifer D’Amato

Wow, I can’t believe what I just read (reader’s comments-not your blog! LOL!)  I have been following your blog for a while now and watched your appearance on Anderson Cooper.  What bothers me most about the above comments is this is another reminder that most people are not authentic or living as their true selves.  If we are, then nothing anyone says can get us that shaken up-or make us feel this great need to defend ourselves (while refuting someone else).  I appreciate what you write, whether I agree one hundred percent or not is really not the point.  It gets me thinking out of my own little bubble and ideas and for that I am grateful.

  • Kelly

    Good stuff, Liz. Hilarious.

My daughter is 17, and is a blogger, and when  she posted her commentary on this video, she was really nervous about what people would say about it.  She was uncomfortable with the video as well, and was anticipating some negative comments, which to my sweet, non-confrontational 17 yr old, is excruciating. She has strong, well-thought out/prayed over opinions, but is still young and easily crumpled by criticism, esp. rude comments by adults.

I showed her this post, and encouraged her to read it several times.  It takes a lot of courage to put our thoughts out into the public eye, especially when we are going against the grain.

Thanks for giving my daughter a brilliant example of how to deal with these kinds of comments.  I can tell her that it’s easier if we don’t take ourselves too seriously and keep our hearts open to learning, but you showed her how to do it.

    Thanks again.  :)

  • Maggie

I was in mass a few weeks ago watching everyone from our large parish go up for the eucharist as I was waiting my turn.  Wondering about each person’s story.  Their history, their current life, what things they are struggling with, praying about.  Wondering if they felt as alone as I do most days, trying to put on a brave face.

And then it hit me, GRACE.  What we need is grace.  Could you imagine what our world would look like if we could just extend the same amount of grace to each other as what we receive in the sacrament of reconciliation?  What it would feel like to actually have a safe place to freely love each other and God?  To be fully human, completely flawed and still loved?  Sigh.  I don’t have much faith we’ll see it this side of heaven.

That’s why I read your blog Elizabeth because you put yourself out there, human flaws and all, day after day.  It’s refreshing to find real!  It may sound weird, but if gives me courage to be real too and let the chips fall where they may.

  • http://www.blessedisthekingdom.com Fr. Christian Mathis

You’ll have to forgive this comment but……oh never mind I’m just gonna get jiggly wit it!

  • Christin

Spocktrine! Yes! Also, you must have some incredibly thick skin. People can be so RUDE! Wonderful of you to handle it with humor. I’d be a puddle of tears somewhere!  :)

  • http://evenonesparrow.blogspot.com even one sparrow

And these are the reasons I fear ever being semi-popular in blogworld.  I like my small readership because they are nice to me.  I do not have a thick skin.  It really aches my heart, the things people say to you and Rachel Held Evans in particular.  I really really hope you receive enough encouragement for each post to put these naysayers aside, but words really hurt.

The only people who have ever criticized me are actually people I know in real life.  I’ve actually seen one of them tweet about my posts ‘behind my back,’ because they still don’t know that I know what they said.  And as much as I want to take the high road, the road of “I write for God and not men,” it still hurts.

Much love to you, Elizabeth.  For what it’s worth, I think you’re amazing!

  • Rkabma

    EEV, hysterical. Love you!

  • Bea

Hi! I think what you said is really beautiful! I really needed to hear what you said this morning, so thank you! Mary really is the key, and I am so happy you befriended her :) And to all you extremely rude people leaving comments, maybe you should judge yourselves first before you judge Mrs. Esther. Because I am sure everyone commenting here is perfect… Anyhow, please keep writing and don’t let these people get in your way :)

  • Guest

I think the video contrasting Jesus is interesting, and not specifically anti Catholic. It could  be said to be speaking of your former fundamentalist Church as much as the Catholic Church.

His theology isn’t perfect, but his faith in Jesus seems to be evident. In reality he seems to be opposed to organised religion that does not respond to the real needs of people whilst posing as an instrument of God. Jesus said as much when he said Tax Collectors and Prostitutes would make their way to Heaven before many of those who heard him speak.

I came to this blog having seen you, by chance, on Fox News debating treats/sweets for Valentines Day.

You have written some intersting things. Thanks.
