Yes, I am one of those wimpy Californians.

It’s been FREEZING cold here in Southern California. And by freezing I mean it’s been 55 degrees. I’ve been going around saying things like: “Can you believe I have to put a JACKET before I go outside??? This is INSANE!” And also: “I’m DYING of cold! WHEN WILL THIS STOPPPPP?”

I am such a wimp that when I visited my sister in Chicago a couple winters ago, I got all personally offended at the weather. I was all: How the HELL do people SURVIVE out here? This climate is HOSTILE to human LIFE!

I totally freaked out in the Chicago airport when it was full-on snowing and planes were still taking off. And no, I was NOT reassured when someone told me not to worry because they “de-ice the plane.” I was like: WHAT?! THE PLANE HAS ICE ON IT?????

Me and weather don’t get along. This is why, no matter how high taxes soar in Southern California and no matter how damn liberal we get, I will NOT leave. I likes my Mediterranean climate. I am Greek. We don’t do cold.

That said, I am a complete wimp.

At least, I’m not alone.

This past week, ALL of Los Angeles was freaking out about the “cold” weather. It got so ridiculous that Jimmy Kimmel did a whole segment on it. I got a good laugh out of this:

So, what’s the weather like where YOU are today?

Hot. Stinking hot and humid. Perth summer! The sea breeze is in now though, hooray!

I think 55 is about 12 Celsius? That’s freeeeeeezing! I think our climate is very similar to yours.

  • Rea

-1. Which is not an abnormal temperature for this time of year.

  • Susan

I live in north central Florida where it is too hot for this time of year. Tell you what, EE, I’ll trade you some heat for some of your cold. Deal?

North Carolina here has been unseasonably warm for January. Sunday it was over 70, today it is in the 40′s this morning and very rainy. I actually am glad it is cooling back off – we already have mosquitoes out biting me! I need the cold to kill them off a bit.

Oh my gracious, I just died watching that! Here in America’s High Five (AKA: Michigan) we just had a couple of days last week that flirted with 50 and we were busting out our flip-flops and shorts! It’s a nice, chilly 31*F (-.5*C) here today and we’re looking at a few days of it hitting the high/mid-teens (around -7*C) next week. We likely won’t see 50 again for an extended period of time until the end of May.

You poor things! I could not do it! I like my 50 degree winters… except this winter :/

  • Catholic Mutt

That video is hilarious! Especially since I got up to -6 this morning. Thank goodness the humidity is low. That really does make a big difference.

  • Jana

I’m a native So Cal girl and I’m freezing too!

  • Rachel

19 degrees as I left for work at 8:20 this morning. Scrapped ice off my car because I still haven’t gotten used to getting out to the car early to let it warm up. Yep, I grew up in California, then Florida and have only recently moved to the Midwest. That being said, I actually find that I kind of like winter. I like the accessories! :-)

Hilarious video, especially since he referenced Milwaukee, where I woke up this morning to true bitter cold – maybe 10 degrees? We had a “heat wave” of barely 50 degrees last week and all our news talked about was how balmy and spring-like it was :) .

  • Amanda

I am from Hesperia, near Victorville, and we are freezing too! I had to buy gloves! I am in the desert! THE DESERT!

    …it is too cold…

  • Sheila

Here in central Utah it got up to 2 for a high yesterday. When I took my kids to school at 8:00 it was -20. The low was -26.

yes….we.are wimps….BUT- if you are trying to farm strawberries and oranges and lemons- ice at night is NOT GOOD

  • Margie

Funny you should ask, because today it SNOWED. Which is in no way normal for Texas. And we LOVED it.

  • http://faithandfood.morizot.net/ Scott Morizot

Hah. Texans talking about snow must have been in the panhandle or somewhere North like Dallas. We have had, I think, more than 7 nights so far that dipped below 32 degrees. We were a little colder than you today. I don’t think the high got out of the 40s. Of course, the high Friday and Saturday was in the 70s… ;-)

I am a native Midwesterner, but what people back east don’t understand is that when you live in basically room-temperature weather year-round, have no insulation in houses, underwhelming heating options, and especially after the VERY HOT summer we had (for soCal), 35 degrees feels colder than any 35-degree weather I remember in the Midwest. It’s insane.

  • cindy klassen

Here in Manitoba Canada it is -21C which is only -6 F. What to come for a visit?

  • Kristi

I live in north TX & yesterday morning I was awakened about 5:30 in the morning by a clap of thunder. We had thundersnow (an actual thing!) mixed w/freezing rain & sleet! It got up to about 40 yesterday & was 27 this morning. Fortunately, this cold blast is about to come to an end & we’ll be close to 60 by this weekend. I don’t mind a few days of freezing weather, but after a while it does get old.

Native SoCal dude, grew up in Whittier. Moved to NoCal 30 years ago.

It was 28 degrees this morning. My thoughts were your thoughts.

At least it’s nice 10 months out of the year up here. Chicago is nice 10 days out of the year – not freezing, not too hot, not 98% humid. Take that back – Chicago is nice about 3 days a year by those standards.

SoCal is nice 300+ days a year – 355 if you live in San Diego. Why does anyone live anywhere else? Aside from having to shoo Liberals off the lawn, that is.

This cracks me up! We just got home (Denver) last night from visiting family in San Diego (where the weather was BEAUTIFUL!). All they could talk about was how cold it’s been! Then, I catch up on my blogs this morning, and both you AND Kristen are talking about the cold weather. Too funny! It was so cold in Denver last week, my fingers went numb just walking from the car to my office. :)
