Five year old theology

We are driving home from dropping Jewel at ballet practice.

“Mama, I have something to say,” Jorie says.

“What is it?”

“I know a lot of things about God.”

“Oh, yeah? What do you know about God?”

“I know God loves everybody and that is most importantest thing of all the things I know.”

Oh, yes. Five year old theology is good enough for me.

And then they turn six and suddenly they’re asking a million really specific and uncannily developed questions about God, and talking theology all the time, but they don’t remember to give any thought to how they treat actual people, so eventually you have to temporarily shut down the God discussion because it’s distracting them from learning to follow rules like not running around on the school bus when it’s driving and not defying the authority of bus drivers and school principals, so you say “Honey, all you need to know is that God loves you. No more questions about it for a while.”

    No? Just me? :-D

Jorie is so cute and so accurate. I agree with her 100%

Yes! My 6 year old has such profound things to share. My sister is getting out of an abusive marriage. My dd asks why he’s so mean…I say something in his heart and mind is broken and he can’t love properly. She says, “oh I know what to do! ‘Jesus please give him a brand new heart so he doesn’t hurt our family anymore’” my sweet girl. God showing me hope.

Perfect! Some days, that’s all I really know for sure about God.

AMEN!! From the mouth of babes.

This reminds me of @MattTCoNP’s post on being a “fundaminimalist” http://www.thechurchofnopeople.com/2013/01/why-im-a-fundamentalist-and-you-should-be-one-too/

  • Maggie

Yep. That’s what I pray for now. That whoever I’m praying for will come to know just how much God loves them. Everything else will sort itself out.

Thank you! Why didn’t I think of that! I think my prayer life will be transformed and I am being serious.

  • Ami

If she’s learned this at five, then I’d say she’s ahead of the game.

    Childlike faith.

This is exactly why Jesus said this in Matthew 18: And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

  • Amanda

She knows more theology than most pastors!

    So sweet :)

  • Anna See

Me too! Love what kids have to share.

  • Gloria

    :D Yes!

That’s beautiful: thanks for sharing! My favorite piece of kid theology (from teaching Sunday School) is “Jesus takes care of dead people.” Just blew me away.

    Cheers, and thanks again!
